Ponytail Palm Care Guide

Plant Care Guide

Ponytail Palm

Botanical Name: Beaucarnea recurvata, boe· KAR· nee· uh  reck· er· VAY· tuh

Common Names: Ponytail Palm, Ponytail Stump

The Ponytail Palm is characterized by a large, domed “stump,” which tapers off into a thinner stem. From the top of the stem, one or more rosettes of long, green, leathery leaves develop as the plant ages. Ponytail palms thrive on benign neglect. They are very easy to grow, so long as you don't overwater them!

Light Requirements

Bright light is ideal with a few hours of direct sunlight each day but it will tolerate indirect light as well.

Water Requirement

Enjoys a deep watering once the soil has completely dried out. Tip: It is always better to underwater than to overwater.

Troubleshooting and Tips

The Ponytail Palm will be perfectly happy being watered every couple of weeks and left alone to soak up the sunlight.

Overwatering will cause blades to yellow and drop.

Brown and crispy blades can occur when the plant is underwatered and left dry for too long.
